How would you deal with a rogue chairman who ensures he has enough votes to approve his schemes |

Hi Mary,
We have a similar issue with our PC chairman unfortunately in my opinion there is not an easy solution unless other like minded Parish Councillors are prepared to stick their heads above the parapet and stand up for what is right for the Parishioners and not just to bolster the Chairmans ego.
Our Cllrs just follow the chair like sheep and are a totally ineffective representation of the village.
Do you have a strong clerk? If so it is up to them to ensure that the rules and standards are correctly followed. If not as like us our clerk is woeful and led by the chairman and will cover up any failings and literally lie their way out of a situation rather than admit they have done wrong. They can't even follow simple procedure and acts that they quote when wishing to exclude the press and public are defunct and have been for years now!!!
If all else fails complain to the local standards board if you are sure that proper procedures are not being followed.
Hope you can get some resolution to your problems soon, ours I think are going to take far longer to resolve. |

Your situation sounds very much like ours except that we have a strong clerk who is still training but becoming very wise. The clerk is quite concerned at what is happening and I am hoping that there will be a situation that we can use against in the end but it is a bit of cat and mouse game.
If we succeed I will let you know. There must be somewhere for you co complain about a clerk who is not doing their job correctly and allowing illegal acts.
We will go to the Standards Board eventually but I must ensure that we can win as the lies that are told are unbelievable and obviously plausible. |

Our chair is so desperate to regain control that he made sure that his proposer and seconder knew that they should vote for him before the meeting started and even confirmed it over the table to them!
Ours is very much an old boys club. |

WE are in a similar position. Our chairman has served more than his term of office already and is now engaging with his pals to stand again at our AGM. He is the most useless individual and they are flocking around him like flies and agreeing to vote for him as chairman for another term but it seems the length of the term is never ending. |
